Three teams from Port Byron CSD recently showcased creativity, teamwork and critical thinking at the FIRST LEGO League Challenge held at Cayuga-Onondaga BOCES.

Eighteen teams from around the region met on January 28 to compete against each other. The challenge consisted of three parts: A research assignment call “The Project” where students research and come up with innovative ideas for solving a defined, real-world challenge; A “Robot Game” where students design and program a LEGO robot to solve missions on a special obstacle course; And “Core Values,” the process the students go through to obtain important life skills such as problem-solving, critical thinking, creativity, and teamwork. 

Each team is given three tries to receive the best possible score. In between competitions, teams would return to the building’s gymnasium to make potential modifications to the programming of their robots.

The event was well-attended, as many family members, friends and school district officials were on hand to cheer for their favorite teams. 

According to the FIRST LEGO League website, FIRST LEGO League introduces science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) to children ages four to 16 through fun, exciting hands-on learning. FIRST LEGO League participants gain real-world problem-solving experiences through a guided, global robotics program, helping today’s students and teachers build a better future together.
