Port Byron Celebrates National Walk to School Day

On September 29, 2025 Port Byron students, staff, and families gathered at the Port Byron Public Library to celebrate National Walk to School Day, an annual event that promotes active lifestyles, safe walking routes, and community connections. The event was sponsored by the Cayuga County Health Department.
Escorting the large group of students and families on their walk to school was School Resource Officer Roden, joined by member of Cayuga County Sheriff’s Department Deputy Forgham, Deputy Elinwood, Capt. Chadwick, Officer Hermann, and Officer Ruzicka. Their presence ensured a safe journey and gave students an opportunity to engage with the officers who serve and protect their community.
Students were able to learn and practice the rules of the road on their way to school as they completed "Safe Walk to School" bingo cards.
National Walk to School Day nationwide in celebrating Walk to School Day, officially observed on October 8, helps encourage healthy habits while also teaching students about the importance of safety. The Cayuga County Health Department and our local law enforcement officers supported students helping to make the event meaningful.
Active trips to school provide children with the daily physical activity they need, helping them build strong bones and muscles, improve focus in the classroom, and establish healthy habits that can last a lifetime. At the same time, Walk to School Day underscores the importance of pedestrian safety and the need for safe, accessible routes to school.
The benefits extend beyond students. Communities that encourage walking and biking to school often see reduced traffic congestion, safer neighborhoods, and stronger community ties.
Port Byron’s celebration of National Walk to School Day was a success thanks to the collaboration of families, school staff, the Cayuga County Health Department, and local law enforcement.
