PB Staff Spotlights: Doreen Lupo Still Having Fun After Nearly 30 Years

Thanks to students who teach her new things every day, Port Byron CSD second grade teacher Doreen Lupo is still having fun after 29 years on the job.

Over the course of the last three decades, Lupo has spent time in several elementary grade levels before finding a home teaching in the second grade. For Lupo, the second grade provides the perfect balance of curriculum and student needs.

“I enjoy the curriculum and the age of the students. I enjoy that they’re independent, yet still need us,” she said. “I tell my students all the time, ‘We all have responsibilities. You just have little responsibilities.’”

Along those lines, Lupo said it is her students who keep the job fun after nearly 30 years.

“I’m learning every day too. Education keeps changing,” she said. “The kids do and say things that open my eyes every day.”

Lupo said she was inspired to become a teacher by her own third grade teacher. She said her teacher’s approach made the class exciting and different, something she hopes she provides for her students.

When asked what advice she would give to new teachers, Lupo said the best advice is to remain flexible and roll with the punches.

“You can learn all the courses, but you need to experience teaching first-hand and learn from those experiences,” she said. “Just learn to modify and adjust.”

Outside of work, Lupo enjoys spending time with family and friends, and walking her two dogs… with one key stipulation!

“As long as it’s not too hot,” she said with a smile. “I’m more into fall weather!”
