Port Byron senior Erica Helzer will attend Cayuga Community College in the fall.

Class of 2017 Senior Spotlight: Erica Helzer

Port Byron Central School District senior and Top 10 student Erica Helzer spent most of her high school career balancing various extra-curricular activities with academics.

“Keeping my grades up while still doing other activities was the most challenging task I faced during high school,” she said.

This fall, Erica will attend Cayuga Community College. She plans to study liberal arts and hopes to pursue a career out-of-state.

During her time at Dana L. West Junior/Senior High School, Erica was a member of National Honor Society and drama and environmental clubs. She also participated on the girls’ basketball and track (indoor and outdoor) teams.

She said her favorite high school memories include attending prom and playing on the basketball team with her friends. Her favorite class was physical education.

“One of my favorite moments was basketball’s senior night,” she said. “It made me realize my high school sports seasons were coming to an end. It’s sad, but you just have to keep going.”

If given the chance to experience high school all over again, Erica said she would take on the opportunity just so that she could re-live some of her favorite memories and appreciate them more, even though she doesn’t like waking up early.

As she recalls the past four years, Erica said she owes much of her success to her parents and coaches.

“They each have shaped me into the person I am today,” she said.

And as she looks ahead to her next journey, she said she plans to keep working hard and putting great effort into everything she does.

But first, summer vacation awaits her.

“I hope to have a fun summer and learn how to surf,” she said.

Erica is the daughter of Elaine and Steve Helzer. She has one sister, Stephanie.
