Students selling t-shirts, ribbons honoring Vietnam vets

Port Byron Central School District students, staff and community members are preparing for the arrival of The Wall That Heals - the Vietnam Veterans Memorial replica, which is scheduled to arrive on campus by motorcade escort on May 31.

The traveling memorial is a 250-foot replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial located in Washington, D.C. It includes a Mobile Education Center that offers more information about the Vietnam War, including photos of service members whose names are on The Wall, a timeline of the Vietnam era, and letters and memorabilia left at The Wall in Washington, D.C.

The Wall That Heals will be situated on Port Byron’s Athletic Complex located on Route 31. The exhibit opens 7 p.m. May 31 and will remain open to the public (24 hours) through 4 p.m. June 4. A ceremony will be held each day the exhibit is open.

Members of Dana L. West Junior/Senior High School’s Student Government Association and Mrs. Danyluk’s entrepreneurship class are selling t-shirts (see image below) and ribbons in honor of The Wall That Heals and the 58,315 Americans who made the ultimate sacrifice in Vietnam.

On sale now through May 18, t-shirts are $15 each and were designed by Port Byron art student Josh Kyle. Yellow memorial ribbons are also available for $1 each, or $25 per roll. The ribbons will remain fastened to the district’s campus fence throughout the event. Students hope to sell 4,126 ribbons – one for each New York resident who lost his or her life during the war.

Shirts and ribbons can be requested by emailing These items will not be sold during the June 1-4 event. Please indicate number of items and shirt size (if applicable) in the email request.
