Class of 2017 Senior Spotlight: Ashley K. Westover

Port Byron Central School District’s Class of 2017 valedictorian Ashley Westover is ready to take on life post high school.

This fall, Ashley will begin her collegiate journey at Cayuga Community College (CCC). She plans to study accounting and, once her studies are complete at CCC, transfer to a four-year college.

While attending Dana L. West Junior/Senior High School, Ashley participated in the environmental and yearbook clubs. She also played junior varsity volleyball, wrote for Panther Press and is a National Honor Society member.

Ashley said her favorite academic subject was math because it was challenging. The annual homecoming events created some of her favorite high school memories.

"Students are happy, excited and fired up," she said. "It’s just a great time to have fun with your classmates and share school spirit."

That tight-knit, school-spirited community is something Ashley said she will miss most about attending Port Byron schools.

"You can’t really turn a corner without recognizing someone you know," she said.

For several years, Ashley planned to enter the medical field post-high school. She said studying Anatomy and Physiology during her senior year helped her realize that pursuing a medical career was not what she wanted to do. She credits her parents for always pushing her to explore interests, work hard and never give up.

"They’re my role models," she said of her parents, Fran and Larry Westover.

When asked what advice, if any, she had for underclassmen, Ashley suggests students stay true to themselves and savor the moments.

Ashley, a Conquest resident, has two brothers: Brock Westover and Brian Gagliano.
