Port Byron Central School District students will collect donations for the Finger Lakes SPCA April 3-7.

Students' pet project will help local animal shelter

As part of a community service project, members of A.A. Gates Elementary School's Student Government are organizing a schoolwide fundraiser to help furry friends in need.

During the week of April 3-7, the Port Byron Central School District students will be collecting pet and shelter-friendly donations in support of the Finger Lakes SPCA of Central New York. The no-kill shelter located in Auburn, NY provides temporary care for companion animals and works to reduce the overpopulation of cats and dogs by offering low-cost spay and neuter clinics.

Students can submit donations to their grade level-assigned box. On April 7, the grade level whose box contains the most items will receive a reward from Student Government.

Community members are welcome to participate, too. Donations can be given to a Port Byron elementary student or dropped off to the district's Lehn Office during regular school hours.

Finger Lakes SPCA has indicated a need for the following donations:

  • Pet food for dogs/catsToys for dogs/cats
  • Cat litter
  • Leashes
  • Towels and blankets (used are fine)
  • Laundry detergent
  • Window cleaner
  • Antibacterial dish soap
  • Hand sanitizer
  • Paper towels
  • Printer paper
