Longtime BOE member passes away

A longtime Port Byron Central School District Board of Education member passed away on March 13.

Robert S. Ware, who served on the board for 15 years, died Monday morning. He was 71 years old.

Mr. Ware attended Port Byron schools (’63) and was serving as Port Byron Fire Department chief at the time of his passing. He was an active community member and frequently visited Port Byron CSD to teach students about fire safety. For many years, Mr. Ware transformed into Santa Claus for A.A. Gates Elementary School’s annual Christmas party.

In 2014, when Mr. Ware was seeking his fifth term as a school board member, he told The Citizen newspaper was seeking reelection because he was devoted to providing the best educational environment to students without a large taxpayer burden by using all available resources both on a state and local level.

Mr. Ware’s fifth term was set to conclude on June 30.
