District in mourning following traffic accident

The Port Byron school community is mourning the death of a parent of two Port Byron students following a traffic accident in the town of Montezuma on Tuesday, Nov. 20, 2012.

At about 6 p.m., a car swerved out of the northbound lane of Route 90 near Salt Block Road and struck the side of a Seneca Falls Central School District school bus that had just left a wrestling scrimmage at Port Byron, according to media reports. The vehicle ricocheted off the school bus and struck an oncoming car. Two people were killed. One student on the Seneca Falls school bus was taken to the hospital with what appeared to be non-serious injuries, according to reports

Port Byron guidance counselors were available to speak with students and staff on Wednesday, Nov. 21.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with those involved in the accident," said Port Byron Superintendent Neil O'Brien.
